  14. I am trying to compile the tex source code from lib.tar, web.tar,
  15. and web2c.tar.  In the file web2c-6.1/web2c/INSTALL I found
  16. these words of wisdom:

  18.  9. `make formats' to make the TeX fmts and Metafont bases (the Make
  19.    variables `fmts' and `bases' define the list).  If you don't know
  20.    what this means, see the section `Format files and preloading' below.
  21.    
  22.    Before doing this, the basic .tfm, .tex, and .mf files must be
  23.    installed, and your search paths (e.g., the environment variables
  24.    TEXINPUTS, TEXFONTS, etc., or the compile-time defaults in
  25.    kpathsea/paths.h.in if the variables are unset) must look in those
  26.    directories.  Also check the value of the localmodes Make variable.
  27.    
  28.    If you don't have the tfm/tex/mf files, see the file
  29.    ftp.cs.umb.edu:pub/tex/FTP.nwc (which also contains tape ordering
  30.    information). (This file is not included in the distribution because
  31.    it changes far more frequently than web2c.)

  33. I do not have the directory tfm anywhere in site.  I looked in
  34. the file FTP.nwc and found nothing about this!  Where should I
  35. look for an archive for these files?

  37. Also, in the file kpathsea/HIER, there is a list of
  38. the directories that should be found under texmf.
  39. Among those listed is the directory ini.  Again, I
  40. do not have this directory and can't find anything
  41. else about it in any of the files.  What's going on
  42. here?
